Daniel Fast, any takers?

Filed under: Daniel Fast — chris on Saturday, August 23, 2008

I’ve challenged the people of Mountain View Church to experience a “Daniel Fast” from Sunday August 24th thru Saturday August 30th.  Typically this fast goes for twenty-one days but I thought this might be a good introduction to those who have never done a “fast” before.

Fasting in the Bible usually means no food for a set amount of time and in extreme cases (e.g. Moses, Jesus, etc.) it could mean no food or water.  The Daniel Fast comes from Daniel 10:2-3 “In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks.  I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”

The Daniel Fast includes: Fruits, Vegetables, and whole grains.  For a good overview check out www.danielfast.wordpress.com  The essence of the fast though is not found in food or that we are on a diet or any other trivial matters.  Rather the essence of the fast is our opportunity to rid ourselves of some distractions and taste some sacrifice in order to draw near to God.  I hope you’ll take up the challenge and give the Daniel Fast a try and see what the Risen Christ may do in your life!
