When opportunity knocks …

Filed under: Misc — chris on Saturday, August 16, 2008

The men’s group that I meet with on Tuesday mornings recently completed Mark Batterson’s book “In a Pit with a Lion on a Snow Day”.  If you haven’t read it I highly recommend it!

Mark gave some wonderful background on the English word Opportunity which comes from the Latin phrase ob portu.  Mark says, “In the days before modern harbors, ships had to wait till flood tide in order to make port.  The Latin phrase ob portu referred to ‘that moment in time when the tide would turn’.  I love that word picture for the nature of the opportunities that come our way.

Dreams of the future …

Filed under: Vision — chris on Thursday, August 14, 2008

Thomas Jefferson said, “I am more interested in the dreams of the future than the history of the past”.

I’m so excited about the vision and the people that have called Mountain View Church home.  I’m blown away by the quality of the people that have made Mountain View Church home.  They continue to inspire my faith and help me to imagine the future.  The “dreams of the future” are always held with an open hand.  They compel us to give up good things in order to embrace the best things.  Our dreams force us also to live beyond what we can do in order to thoroughly embrace what God wants to do through us.

Back to school!

Filed under: Misc — chris on Thursday, August 14, 2008

Hamilton County public schools are now back in session.  That means for all school age parents we are now officially on vacation!  Well, maybe not vacation, but definately back to a consistent schedule.

School for the Hill household means that Lydia will be starting school at Chattanooga State and working for Diversified Companies.  I know this cuts into her social life but as the kids say, “You’ve got to do what dad makes you do” or something like that.

Got Gas?

Filed under: Gas Buy Back — chris on Monday, August 11, 2008

Mountain View Church is sponsoring their first “gas buy back”.  What is a gas buy back?

Mountain View Church is partnering with Steve Ray at the Ooltewah Midnight Oil Gas station to lower the price of 4,000 gallons of gas on Sat. August 30th beginning at 9:30am.  There will be a fifteen gallon limit and cash sales only will be accepted.  So, if gas on August 30th is listed at $3.50 per gallon Mountain View Church will “buy down” the price so that you pay only $2.50 per gallon with a fifteen gallon limit.  How cool is that?

We thought that might be a fun way to make an impact on our community, so let us know what you think!

Baby Steps…

Welcome to the blog of Chris Hill, Lead Pastor of Mountain View Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Let’s start with full disclosure - I’m a technological neophyte (this will quickly become evident).  My desire is to engage with others who desire to take a “next step” in their walk with God.  For some that “next step” may be one of discussion.  I hope this blog will provide a context (an atmosphere if you will) that encourages spiritual development.  Others may find through this blog a place to solidify decisions or commitments to Christ.  Sometimes those might be first time decisions for Christ and at other times they might be “next step” faith decisions. Finally, I hope this blog will encourage people to become better disciples of Jesus Christ.

You’ll probably find some personal stories from my life, family, and church experiences.  Along with those personal experiences I hope to add some reflections.  That’s why I’ve called this blog “this got me thinking”.  As friends quickly find out about me, I never know what I think until I say it!  True discovery is the result of the give and take of spirited discussion and sometimes debate.  At the end of the day I trust that I will become a better blogger and we will become better followers of Jesus Christ!
